LACTATE THRESHOLD TESTING

When we exercise, lactate (or lactic acid) is produced in our bloodstream as a result of energy production. The higher the intensity that we train at, the more lactate is produced. Our body has the ability to clear lactic acid up to a point (the lactate threshold). Beyond this, we are producing more lactate that our body can clear and we begin to fatigue. Our ability to clear lactate is a good indicator of the fitness our endurance of an athlete.

What is a Lactate Threshold test?

A lactate threshold test can help determine the correct intensities we should be using in our training. By determining and training at our lactate threshold we can improve our body’s ability to deal with and clear lactate. During a lactate threshold test, the amount of lactate being produced at various intensities is measured, together with the corresponding heart rate and paces which can then be graphed on a lactate curve. Training intensities can be established using the compiled information.

How does it work?

The runner completes a series of repetitions, usually 4-6 minutes in length. A small blood sample is taken at the end of each repetition and the heart rate is marked. The figures are recorded and plotted on a graph to give an accurate lactate curve for the particular athlete.

Benefits of lactate testing

The results from a lactate threshold test allow us to apply the correct and most beneficial training paces and intensities when designing a training plan. This leads to more successful training with less likelihood of burnout and injury if applied correctly. Also, if the test is repeated throughout the year it is a useful and accurate way to monitor the progress of an athlete by seeing how they are reacting to the prescribed training.

What happens after the test?

After the test, you will be given the full set of results including the completed lactate curve. Suggested training paces and sessions to improve and train at the found lactate threshold will be provided. Some predicted race times based on current fitness will also be provided.
